Skincare Options For Your Specific Skin Concerns

Okay, you guys. I have been trying some major skincare products recently and I thought I’d put them all together in one post. I categorized everything according to skin concerns, so it’ll be easier for you to sort through the products based on your current skin need. You ready? Let’s do this!

1. If You Want…Matte Skin
Practically every Pinay I talk to complains about the fact that her skin looks shiny or oily. If you want to control your grease production (or at least curb it while you’re wearing makeup), these goodies from Benefit can help.

That's the Benefit Porefessional Matte Rescue Gel, License To Blot, and Instant Wipeout Masks set.

The Skin Lowdown: The mask is fun to use (watch how here) and it’s a great way to cleanse your pores of unwanted dirt and oil. As for the water-based mattifying gel, I like applying this on my T-zone when I don’t want to wear makeup and just want to look fresh all day sans retouching. Meanwhile, the License to Blot stick is fantastic for touch-ups. It has invisible blotting spheres that zaps shine for up to six hours and the stick is shaped like a diamond, so you can get apply it over the corners of your face easily.

2. If You Want…Smaller Pores
The reason your pores look big is because there’s dirt and oil trapped in there. This means that you need something that’s gonna get in there and do some deep cleaning!

Check out the Algenist Multi-Perfecting Pore Corrector Concentrate if you want tighter pores.

The Skin Lowdown: It has alguronic acid (so it has anti-aging benefits) combined with salicylic acid (to exfoliate and cleanse pores). I usually apply a moisturizer after I use this because it’s not super hydrating, but this lightweight, oil-free serum did help refine and brighten my skin. Full disclosure: my pores aren’t too huge to begin with, so I didn’t see much of a difference. But research results showed that 90% of the 100 women they tested noticed that their pore size minimized within four weeks of use.

3. If You Want To…Control Oil Production.

I started taking new vitamins recently and it made my face (and scalp!) super oily. It was weird, because my skin would feel grimy even after I washed my face. So I added these goodies from Bioderma into my routine to help balance my complexion again.

From left to right, that's the Bioderma Sébium Pore Refiner, Sébium Akn Smoothing Purifying Care, and the Sébium H20 Purifying Cléansing Micelle Solution.

The Skin Lowdown: I wanted to control my skin’s oil production without overdrying it, so I would use the Sébium H20 Purifying Cléansing Micelle Solution after I wash my face. Yup, after! It’s actually more of a makeup remover, but since it’s also a cleansing water, I would swipe it over my skin to get rid of leftover oil (think of it as a substitute for toner). After that, I’d apply the Sébium Akn Smoothing Purifying Care in the morning. It helps prevent your pores from getting clogged, so it served as a barrier between my skin and makeup to help prevent breakouts. Loved this complexion balancing formula because after 2 to 3 weeks, my skin went back to normal!

4. If You Want…Younger, Wrinkle-Free Skin
There’s nothing wrong with lines, but if it’s making you feel insecure or unpretty, then there are tons of anti-aging solutions out there that you can turn to. Here are the two that I’m currently digging.

This is for the girl in her 20s who's starting to see the first signs of aging.

The Skin Lowdown: You start working when you’re in your early 20s, so this when the real stress comes in. Fight that (it can age you!) by using a face cream that helps your skin relax and stay hydrated. A good option to try would be the Nuxe Nirvanesque 1st Wrinkles Smoothing Cream (for normal skin) and 1st Wrinkles Smoothing Eye Contour Cream. The face cream is spiked with Peony and Blue Lotus seeds to help smoothen any lines and the eye cream contains hyaluronic acid to help reduce dark circles and brighten up your peepers.

This one's an excellent option for the girl who likes using organic and natural beauty products.

The Skin Lowdown: I cannot begin to tell you how much I love Neal’s Yard Remedies. I first discovered it when I was in Korea and I’m now happy to report in that it’s finally available in Manila. The brand is legit organic and they are effective, so if you want to keep your skin youthful without loading up on chemicals, try their Rejuvenate Frankincense Organic Beauty Collection. The star ingredients are high-quality frankincense oil and antioxidant herbal extracts, which are supposed to tone your skin while reducing the appearance of lines. It contains a Rejuvenating Frankincense Refining Cleanser (to sweep away grime and makeup with the help of a cloth), Rejuvenating Frankincense Toner (to prep skin for moisturizing), and the Frankincense Hydrating Cream (to moisturize, firm, and soften skin). P.S. I’m a big believer in using a whole range together, so this is a great kit to invest in.

5. If You Want…Moisturized Skin.
Most girls (myself included) flinch when you say a product has oil and this one says it so blatantly on the label. I’ve learned to appreciate this ingredient though—especially now that I’m older! Here are the oil-infused products that I have on rotation whenever my face starts to feel dry and tight.

Last one for my anti-aging finds! The Laneige Perfect Renew set.

Use this if you love Korean beauty products!

The Skin Lowdown: I got this together with a few sample-sized products from the brand, but it’s the Laneige Perfect Renew Regenerator that I enjoyed using the most. This serum is practically like water and it smell refreshingly sweet. It will melt into your skin, but you’ll have to rub it in well for it to be absorbed. One drop goes a long way in terms of hydration, so if you have extra dry skin, you’ll like how soothing this is. Full disclosure: It’s also supposed to have wrinkle-fighting capabilities, but I didn’t notice a big diff. I also wouldn’t use this with a separate moisturizer since it’s already pretty potent if you’re only after hydration.

Here's another one for those who love oil-infused serums!

Here’s another one for those who love oil-infused serums!

The Skin Lowdown: I’ve had this for a while now, but only started using it now because summer + oil isn’t the best combo. But now that the weather is getting colder in my part of the world, I’ve been reaching for this more often—especially when my skin begins to feel dry and itchy. Why I like it? The Origins Three Part Harmony Oil-Infused Serum smells heavenly (like refreshing botanicals) and whenever I use it, I feel like my skin just drinks it up. I like that it has Tazetta Lily Bulbs and Myrtle (it’s supposed to help produce natural collagen) and that my complexion looks more radiant after I smooth it on.

6. If You Want To…Have Clearer Skin.
I usually like to use this whenever a pimple pops up, but lately, I’ve been turning to this power duo. The best part? They’re budget-friendly finds that you can find at local drugstores!

These babies are also clinically-proven to reduce pimples in just 3 days!

The Skin Lowdown: You have to use these together to score the best results. The Pond’s Acne Clear Facial Foam and Acne Clearing Gel both use a unique technology that kills the germs that cause your pimples and prevents them from recurring. How? It contains Thymol Essence, which breaks through the cell wall of the pimple-causing bacteria. Then once that wall is broken, another ingredient called Terpineol Essence can enter the cell and destroy the bacteria at its root. Very high-tech stuff (and apparently, it’s also the latest skin-clearing breakthrough in decades), but it works! I use it only on the areas that I need it, but if it’s the week that Aunty Flow is coming for a visit, then I use it on my entire face to stop breakouts.

7. If You Want To…Use Sunscreen Without Breaking Out
What a dilemma, right? Fortunately, I found one that works really well for me and it’s pretty effective at shielding UV rays, too.

So good!

So good!

The Skin Lowdown: The Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield is an anti-aging treatment, primer, and sunscreen in one bottle, so it can cut down the number of products you use. It has Mushroom Peptides that help fight the signs of aging and a soft-focus complex smooths that helps improved tone and texture. But yes, basically I can use it and not breakout. There are also lots of ways you can use this (you can even make your own CC cream with this by mixing it with your own foundation), but if you want to learn more and hang out with me, I’m giving away a few slots to this event!
