Because I live in a tropical country where it’s okay to wear flip-flops practically anywhere, the Make Your Own Havaianas (#MYOH) event is something that a lot of people look forward to each year. But for a non-fashion girl like me, it can be quite overwhelming since there are so many decisions to make—like which strap color, sole color, strap size, and which pins you want to put on your very own customized pair. So if you’re planning on chasing down a #MYOH event (deets below—it’ll be held all over the country this summer), here are my tips:
1. Research before you go.
The whole point of the #MYOH event is, of course, that you can choose how you’re going to assemble and accessorize your flip-flops. This year’s theme is the 90s, so they have glow-in-the-dark pins, lots of video game-inspired pins, and you can even customize a lego-like block with your initials via 3D printing. There are a lot of choices, so I suggest you get a head start (and avoid getting options paralysis at the venue) by looking for photos on social media via the hashtag #MYOH2017 to see which designs you like.
2. You can actually choose the size of your strap.
When you buy Havaianas, they normally pair a 37/38 size for the sole with a 37/38 strap. But you can actually request for a bigger or smaller size for the strap if your feet are wider or more narrow—it’s really up to you what feels more comfortable. You just have to sign a waiver since this isn’t the norm, but peeps with irregular shoe sizes will appreciate this nifty hack.
3. Speaking of straps, don’t go for the slim one if you love accessorizing.
You probably already know can choose a slim strap or a regular strap, but did you know that the slim strap can only handle 3-4 pins max? If you add anymore, the #MYOH team will warn you that the strap might break off faster while you’re walking. So if you want to pin like crazy, go for the thicker strap.
4. You need to be patient.
Yup, you will probably encounter a lot of excited (and possibly, pushy) people who can’t wait to create their customized flip-flops. So I repeat: Be patient. Eat, go to the bathroom, and make sure your phone is fully-charged so you don’t get too bored or annoyed while you wait for you pair to be assembled. P.S. If you want to customize your pin with your initials, you’ll need to be extra patient since this can take at least 15 minutes or more depending on the queue.
5. You need to try them on.
After you’ve chosen your pins and they’ve assembled your pair, try them on. Check and see if the pins are poking your feet or uncomfortable while you walk. If they are, make sure you tell them so they can check and adjust accordingly. I think mine might’ve been pinned wrong, so it’s kinda annoying when I wear them for a long time.
If you don’t have time to head to SM Megamall this weekend, don’t worry! The #MYOH event will actually be around all summer and all over the Philippines! Here are the dates to watch out for:
- May 18 to 21 at All Flip-Flops Bonifacio High Street, SM City Tarlac, and SM City Iloilo
- May 25 to 28 at the Alabang Town Center Activity Center, All Flip-Flops SM City Naga, and SM City Cabanatuan
- June 1 to 4 at All Flip-Flops Robinsons Place Ermita and Sole Patrol Robinsons Calasiao; June 8 to 12 at All Flip-Flops TriNoma and Ayala Center Cebu
- June 15 to 18 at All Flip-Flops SM Mall of Asia, SM Seaside City Cebu, and SM Lanang Premier
- June 22 to 25 at CommonThread Powerplant Mall, Rockwell
- June 29 to July 2 at All Flip-Flops SM Megamall, SM City Cagayan de Oro, and Red Dot Robinsons Place Ilocos.
And in case you’re wondering what my customized Havaianas look like…
Do you like it? If I could choose again, I might get the thicker strap—only because the 3D pin looks a bit too big on the thin strap. Or, I would just add another pin (the TV pin was cute!) and not get the chunky 3D pin at all.
What pins and colors would you choose for your #MYOH? Leave a comment and let me know! ♥
