It’s not uncommon for a modern woman to work, cook dinner, be the beautiful and charming date at her SO’s work event, and even be a mom. And I’m just grazing the basic roles here, so yeah, it can be a lot to handle.
“We talked about what we’re good at and what we’re poor at and realized we can help each other out,” says Frances. And when the trio realized that other women needed help too, they created a venue where like-minded gals can get together and form a tribe where they can share stories, swap business contacts, and help build each other up.

During the Beauty Biz Bliss launch-slash-gathering, we were asked to share a bit about ourselves and what we do—and maaaaan—I was in shock. Women are multi-hyphenates now and work hard to chase all their passions. It made me realize that there’s this desire to “do everything”—like have the dream job, create online success, and have the family to come home to.
If that’s your goal, then you could definitely use these three wonder women (who are also top mommy bloggers, btw) in your life.

I know, I know. I missed my usual Sunday Sparkle post (sorry, guys). It doesn’t feel right to start the week without it, so I’m just going to write a quick one to share one of the best a-ha moments I had last week. And guess what? I learned it from a very adorable toddler!
Just look at this cutie pie! He’s the son of my good friend, Frances of Topaz Horizon.
While reading Frances’ post, she talked about how Iñigo was contemplating love (it’s very cute—read it here first if you don’t want spoilers). Basically, this little one began to realize just how intensely he loved his Mama—and then he got a bit worried. “This is a scary feeling. Is there something wrong with me?” Iñigo asked. My friend, Mariel, is here from New York (her guest post about NYC beauty here). We had a quick catch-up sesh over matcha lattes at St. Marc and it was so much fun hearing about her life in the Big Apple.
We all met when we were editors at Summit Media. Mariel and I worked for Cosmo and Frances was EIC of OK! magazine.
Here’s what’s cool: Mariel was actually the beauty editor before me. Back then, I was the assistant features editor and was in charge of writing, assigning, and beefing up the content for the magazine from relationship to work articles. When I realized that I wanted to get into beauty, Mariel was super supportive and gave me two very important tips when she eventually stepped down from her post: (1) A beauty editor must always have fabulous hair. (2) Always remember that not all the PR people you meet will be your friends. Sometimes, it’s really just work.
And yup, I really took her tips to heart—especially since the hair thing was something the beauty editor before Mariel told her when she stepped in. I guess that makes it like a Cosmo tradition of sorts? Btw, trying out a new curling iron here! What do you think?
Looking back, I realized that Mariel’s first tip helped me step up and start to imbibe the fact that I also had to look my best whenever I represented the magazine at events. The second tip helped me stay grounded. Of course, I didn’t walk around thinking that all the PR people I met were being insincere. But it did help me realize that all the events, junkets, and even freebies are just part of the job. It helped me stay levelheaded and reminded me that I’m not entitled to anything just because I work in the media.
While we’re on the subject of tips & lessons, let me share the latest beauty-related one I learned from Frances. She blew my mind while we were hanging out with the L’indochine girls (hi Char and Leona!) at the Crane PH event!
We were talking about eye cream (my recos here and here) and Frances said that you have to pat it over your brow bone as well. “This way, it stays lifted and won’t cause your upper lids to droop,” she said. OMG, OMG OMG!!! It makes so much sense!

Hello, my sparkly loves! I’m just checking in to gab about some of the fun stuff that’s been happening lately and events that I’m looking forward to (you can win tickets to one of them since it’s Freebie Friday!). Check them out:
Numero Uno: Workshopping With My Gal Pals
I love learning new things and sharpening my skills. Instagram has been one of my pet projects lately (follow me via @beautyandsparkl). You’ll notice that I’ve been sticking to a white theme lately, because my blog coach (Hi, Martine!) has urged me to take better photos and is pushing me to improve my visuals. Have you noticed? Do you like it? I sure hope so—I’ve been working really hard at it!
That’s my friend, Nikki! We were trying to be the smart & snooty classmates—but it obviously failed! We’re just happy and bubbly always ;)
It’s always fun to be with your girls when you take a class. Nikki joined because she just launched a new clothing line for kiddos (visit Honeycombkids.com.ph to check out the cute outfits!). I already bought a shirt for my nephew, and wish I had a niece I could buy dresses for. Haha! Either way, this is going to save me a lot of time during Christmas! I think I’ll just order all my presents online and have it delivered to my friends’ houses.
That same week, my favorite mommy blogger had a workshop for Philosophy! Say hi to Frances of Topaz Mommy!
Like I’ve said before, there’s always something new to learn when it comes to beauty. Frances shared that one of the best skin tips she learned is to always use sunscreen every single day. Nikki’s is to drink lots of water because it’s the best beauty elixir. “Not drinking enough makes your skin look dull and dry,” she says. “Healthy skin is well-hydrated skin.”
Haha, love my girls! We all used to work for Summit (F was EIC of OK!, Nikki was the fashion & beauty editor for OK!, and I was the resident Cosmo girl!). I’ll always be grateful for that job because it brought fabulous friends into my life. <3
Numero Dos: Add Me On Snapchat!
Yes, I caved. I actually downloaded the app (twice) and deleted it (twice) months ago. My brain couldn’t understand (or rather, didn’t want to understand) what was going on. But after a few friends convinced me that it was a fun way to share behind-the-scenes stuff, I caved. So tune in via @beautyandsparkl for lots of unfiltered fun!
Just posted my first Snap (?!). Take a peek at how messy my desk really is by Friday! At least, I think I posted it. Hmm, let me know if it’s not there! LOL
So I hope you guys will follow me via @beautyandsparkl!! And if you’re a Snapchat pro, do help this tech-challenged lady out and show me some tricks to make it easier!
Numero Tres: Beauty Sale Alert!
Eye makeup is always fun to splurge on. The only downside is that it can expire quickly (mascara’s three months guys) and you have to throw it out if you get an eye infection or something (it happens). That’s why I’m super excited to start hoarding this October!
It’s all about the eyes, right?? Goofing off with fellow beauty blogger, Marj! So happy I got Kendall <3 Hehe!
Can you guys guess who’s having the huge sale? Find out after the jump! Continue reading →
Okay, fragrance addicts! You’ll be happy to know that Jo Malone London is coming to Manila in October 2015. They’re opening in Greenbelt 5 and I can’t wait to see what the boutique will look like.
Got a sneak peek at the fragrances and learned a few tricks about scent layering.
What makes Jo Malone unique is that you can layer their fragrances to create your own signature scent. Their reco: up to three colognes max. You also have to mist the scents all over your body, not your pulse points, to allow the different notes to waft around you.
The scents I played around with: Nectarine Blossom & Honey, Lime Basil & Mandarin, English Pear & Freesia, Peony & Blush Suede.
Everything smells amazing in the bottle, but you really have to try it on your skin before you buy. Fragrances react differently to your body chemistry, so what smells good on a friend may not smell as good on you.
That’s why we took advantage of the fragrance bar at the event! Frances of Topaz Mommy and Angela of Lush Angel, and I kept misting scents on like crazy.
When experimenting with Jo Malone colognes, you have to think of yourself as a “fragrance stylist.” They have over 20+ colognes in their collection (click here to see them all), so you can get creative with the combos you layer on. You can even collect the different scents, so you have a fragrance wardrobe to choose from. Clickity-click for more scoops about the event and to learn more about how Jo Malone scented Kate Moss’ wedding (yes, wedding!). Continue reading →
