A Hair Cut Before Chinese New Year Can Bring Good Luck!

A friend of my mentioned this little superstition to me, so I thought it would be a good time to post about my mini makeover with celebrity hairstylist, Jing Monis.

The obligatory before shot!

The obligatory before shot!

At this point, it had been about 7 months since my last hair cut and over a year since my last hair color. OMG, I was ready (but nervous!) for the change.

The regrowth (and my white hair!) is no joke, guys.

The regrowth (and my white hair!) is no joke, guys. Look how black my hair really is!

I usually have a peg for Jing to follow, but this time around, I just let him do his thing. I just told him that I wanted a cut that fell above my shoulders, color that can help camouflage my greys, and highlights that’ll add more depth to my strands.

Mixing, mixing! Let the coloring process begin!

Since I don’t like having my hair color retouched too often, Jing gave me a chestnut brown base so the re-growth won’t be too obvious and opted to use a tone down-slash-balayage technique for my highlights.

The waiting game! The whole cut-and-color process took about 4 hours.

The waiting game! The whole cut-and-color process took about 4 hours (I also had a treatment to help reverse some of the chemical damage).

After they were rinsed my hair, I noticed that my highlights were really light. I asked why and they said it was because they used the toning down process to lighten my hair color. Hmm…I think for next time, I will opt the usual foil and balayage painting technique though. I feel like that technique blends more naturally with my strands, but if you’re going for a more blonde effect, then the toning down process will probably be better for you.  Continue reading

I Tried Kim Kardashian’s Hair Treatment

I had an impromptu salon day at Jing Monis Bellevue Alabang with the girls a few days ago and it gave me a chance to try this!

The Olaplex treatment! It's Kim Kardashian's secret to healthy hair.

The Olaplex treatment! It’s Kim Kardashian’s secret to healthy hair.

During her master makeup class last year, Kim revealed that she uses this treatment and even sleeps with it on. It’s apparently the reason she can go from brunette to blonde without worrying about her strands breaking off. So if you want to bleach your hair or even just color it, make sure you use this to prevent damage (more technical deets about it here).

I tried Olaplex No. 1 and No. 2 to repair breakage and prep my hair for color.

The No. 3 bottle is suppose to be something you use at home, but I didn’t get to do so. Hmm, I will ask why the next time I visit. My first impressions: my hair became immediately became softer after the treatment and I like that I can use this to prep my strands pre-color. With the amount of styling I do, I really need something like this!

More on Olaplex and check out my new cut (it’s shorter!) after the jump! Continue reading

My New Cut For 2016

I have been itching for a hair change for some time now. Although I’ve been loving my wavy locks lately, I really can’t resist trying different hairstyles—especially after I saw this!

Oh, Khloe! I don't know why, but she always seems to be my hair peg! Image via instagram.com/khloekardashian.

I super loved Khloe’s new look, but what sealed the deal was when I saw Refinery29 label the “sleek and polished lob” as one of the coolest haircuts for 2016 (read it here). I also spotted a few models rocking the blunt, straight cut on some of the S/S 2016 runway shows, so I figured that now was a good time to try this look.

So I headed to my trusty stylist, Jing Monis, for a cut! This is what my hair looked like before I had anything done.

I love my messy-wavy hair, but I really was in need of a trim. I think it’s been about 3 to 4 months since my last cut, so the ends were getting quite dry already. I was scheduled to come in for a dye job also, but I opted for a powerdose treatment instead so I can rest my scalp and give my strands a hydration-boost.

And there goes my hair! After a quick discussion with Jing, we settled for a straight lob with practically zero layers.

I have to admit that it’s the first time that I actually missed the length of my hair! I’m excited for it to grow back, but I’m also excited to look for new ways to style this cut. Want to see the final look? Clickity-click for the big reveal! Continue reading

New Fave: Keratin Complex Vanilla Bean Hair Treatment

I was watching this video the other day and I found it super hilarious! Loved the reaction of the guy (at the 0:51 mark) when the girl flipped her hair. He was totally mesmerized!

I’ve worked as the beauty editor for Cosmo Philippines for several years, but I don’t think I’ve (knowingly) tried the hair flip move on a guy—but it would be interesting to see if it works. Before I say “challenge accepted” though, I should make sure my hair smells extra good.

It all started with this Keratin Vanilla Bean Hair Treatment that I got at the Jing Monis Salon.

One way to do that is with the Keratin Complex Vanilla Bean Hair Treatment at the Jing Monis Salon (starts at P1,500). It’s supposed to be great for repairing damage from swimming and helps balance dry scalps.

The treatment really helped soften my strands a lot and it got rid of the tiny, dry flakes on my scalp—but what I couldn’t get over was the delicious vanilla scent! It actually reminded me of another beauty tidbit (also learned from Cosmo) about how most men LOVE the scent of vanilla on women. There’s something yummy about the edible scent that just makes them go weak at the knees (it’s supposedly a natural aphrodisiac).

So, yeah…Challenge accepted! Haha, but only because it’ll be fun to see if there’s some truth to these theories about hair flipping and vanilla fragrances! I agree with what one of the girls said at the end of video—you don’t really need these moves. Just sit there and be cute!

What do you think of these “get-the-guy” hair moves? Think you’ll be trying any of them soon for fun? ♥

Current Obsession: Roughed-Up Strands

For the longest time, my ’do has been sleek and polished—everything a modern bob should be. Now, I’m obsessed with a more disheveled, messy-sexy look.

hair-trends-2014-sam-mcknight

Looks like this look is trending, since I spotted more pegs during NYFW 2014! Got these pics from the IG of Sam Mcknight, who is basically my hair god. I met him during a junket once—he does all the major runway shows + Vogue covers.

Anyway, the thing about this look is that it can just look messy (not sexy) on brunettes. Case in point:

My disheveled self. My hair is extremely (and thankfully) thick. My technique here: I applied Moroccan Oil and BedHead After Party on damp strands and air dried. Once dry, I did a quick mist of Tigi Rockaholic Dirty Secret Dry Conditioner.

My hair is extremely (and thankfully) thick. My technique here: I applied Moroccan Oil and misted lots of Osmo Sea Salt Spray on damp strands and air dried. Hmm…too disheveled for me. P.S. Say hi to the BDJBox team!

Hay…So much product and no effect at all! And when my hair is magulo (messy), I don’t feel as put-together as I’d like. So I kept experimenting…

Now we're getting somewhere! Shampooed + conditioned the night before and rough dried with a fan. Then, just added a few more drops of Moroccan Oil.

Now we’re getting somewhere! Shampooed + conditioned the night before and rough dried with a fan. Then, just added a few more drops of Moroccan Oil in the morning. This look works better with a center part, I think.

I think I'm getting it! Misted My Amazing Blow-Dry Secret and used a Vidal Sassoon Curler to add some waves. I just curled it in the middle and left the tips undone. Then, I stretched it out with my fingers, ran a bit of BedHead After Party over the ends to tame frizz, and set my hair with Phyto Hair Spray to add shine.

I think I’m getting it! Misted My Amazing Blow Dry Secret and used a Vidal Sassoon Ceramic Curler (1.2 inch barrel) to add random waves. I just curled 2-inch chunks in the middle and left the tips undone. Then, I stretched out the curls my fingers, ran a bit of BedHead After Party over the ends to tame frizz, and set my hair with Phyto Phytolaque Botanical Shine Spray to add shine.

Doing my hair doesn’t come naturally to me and I usually prefer to just have the awesome stylists at Jing Monis Salon in Greenbelt fix my tresses for events. But because I can’t do that every day, I’m going to have to keep practicing until I can get this textured, roughed-up look down.

What do you think of this hair trend? Would you give it a try? ♥
